Last Friday I was a guest at Lena van der Wal in The Hague to discuss the design of my little home. And to cook a meal together while chatting about our mutual passion: Tiny Houses! Laurens caught up with us a bit later. L&L (for ease I have given them this acronym) had already come up with a few sketches and I really like the layout: the bathroom is at the back, a spacious kitchen, permanent stairs with storage space, a lounge area, doors leading outside. We also looked at some options for the shape of the roof and they had a really nice idea, which I will share with you later since I don’t have any drawings yet. I did get a few screenshots from Lena.

Note that this is far from being the finished product. The roof and stairs will be different, but this is a great start! Lena also thought about creating a desk in the kitchen, that multi-functions as counterspace. I initially had some reservations about this but the more I think about it, the more I like it. We also looked at many pictures for inspiration and talked about types of wood and which color I would prefer. I really like dark, warm tones of wood. If you apply it untreated it usually turns grey, which I’m not very fond of. However, treating the wood with lacquer or something similar is not very ecological… Dilemma! Moreover, I am bound by a limited budget, so Laurens is going to do some ‘wood research’. Lena will be making some wood models of my future home soon in the woodworking shed. Can’t wait to see them! I was given some homework to figure out the measurements of the appliances I wish to install, so that’s what I will be researching. I can also start sourcing windows and frames. If anyone has tips about where to find cheap (used) windows and frames, they are very welcome to let me know!
ZOZ – De Omslag
A while ago I was asked to write an article about my adventures in achieving my new life in a Tiny House for the magazine ‘ZOZ’. It was published this month, and my article is a 2-page spread! I had never written for a magazine or anything like that so felt quite honored! Because who am I, really? J. I just hope that people enjoy reading the article, and that I can focus the attention on the Tiny House movement more that way. Next week L&L and I (makes me suddenly think of the television series Q&Q!! Wow… That’s one way to reveal my age; that show is ancient! Haha!) have an interview with NRC Next. Really exciting!
