Small interior inspiration: the bathroom

One of the great aspects of the Tiny House philosophy is that people consciously choose what suits them and what they like, when it comes to housing. Housing is brought back to its core: just enough and stripped of unnecessary space and things. You can express your personal taste and preferences in the design and by choosing materials of good quality. In that way you get a small and simple, but also very personal, attractive, comfortable and, above all, unique house. One that the whole of Tiny-House-loving-Holland can enjoy and dream of when you share the images with us!

It is wonderfully straightforward, designing a small house. You can put your whole being into it without being overwhelmed by all the choices. Oh rest assured, there is plenty of choices that will have to be made anyway. But isn’t that really great fun, the whole process of figuring out what your style is and how you will have it reflected in your house? I thought so when I was working on the design of my Tiny House. Fortunately I had help. The wonderful team of Buro Walden has designed a fantastic and beautiful house for me that I am still delighted with. With the choices I had to make for the interior I had the help of friends and Pinterest was really my buddy, as I found all the inspiration I needed there.

Some people have the talent to see what fits together in an interior and know exactly what they like. Others, like me, do not or have a little less of that talent. Do you find it difficult to design an interior for your house? To gather the style, colors, materials and accessories so that it becomes a whole with which you can fall in love? Then start small, for example with the bathroom. Create a pin board on Pinterest and start looking for inspiration on the internet or on Pinterest itself. For example, use the keywords ‘tiny’ and ‘bathroom’, and scroll through it. Pin everything you like on your special tiny bathroom pin board. By doing so you will get great ideas. Do not restrain from pinning exuberant ideas, anything that appeals to you can be used. In a small house, a very expressive design can sometimes work surprisingly well. For example:

Now it is good to determine exactly what you want in your bathroom. At least a shower and toilet I’d say, but do you also want a bath? And a sink? It is possible! Those are the personal preferences I was talking about. A bath was one of my dreams; as a child I was already fond of taking a bath. So now I have a very nice soaking tub that I can really enjoy! For me a washbasin was less important, but there are several Tiny Houses in the Netherlands that have one. There are beautiful small types, from very modern and sleek to warm and expressive. Consider for example a nice thick wooden sink-top with a small natural stone washbasin on it. But keep in mind the weight of your interior choices when you build a Tiny House on wheels.

Other choices you have to make are: which toilet will you need in your bathroom? Will your house be connected to the public sewerage and can you therefor choose a water closet (nice old-fashioned word alert!). Or do you need a compost or incineration toilet? Unfortunately, you have less choice there when it comes to appearance. But if the rest of your bathroom is cheerfully styled, then that boring toilet bowl will no longer stand out. ;) Have you planned storage space in your bathroom for your toiletries and towels? Will there be a small washing machine inside? Have you thought about a toilet roll holder and towel rack? Do you want plants in your bathroom and do you need a shelf for that or do you opt for hanging plants?

When you know what installations and things need to be in your bathroom, you can proceed to the style. Colors, materials, etcetera. That is where your Pinterest pin board comes in. In the meantime you have pinned some nice inspiration on it and if you scroll through it you can see pretty much what your style is. If that is still not very clear, ask a friend to have a look at it too. Now you are going to make your ‘plan de campagne’. What color (s) would you like to have in your bathroom? Do you want tiles, varnished or painted wood, maybe even stucco or wallpaper? Combining a striking design on the floor with quiet walls can be beautiful, or vice versa. Or do you want to go bananas with accessories, such as an exuberant shower curtain and colorful bath towels? The advantage of this is that it is easier to vary with your interior. The possibilities are endless! But above all, enjoy the process and ask for help if you cannot solve it yourself. You can even think of professional help from an interior architect or stylist.
